The parts of speech

When we speak and write, we use words to express our thoughts and ideas (we use sentences). Words, then, are the tools of communication. The English language has thousands of words, but all of them fall into 8 groups or classes known as the parts of speech. Each group has it special work to do. One of the most important things to learn about the English language is the fact that the same words are often used as different parts of speach. The following names have been given to the parts of speech:
